Did you know that close to 3,700 children receive help, each month, from the Ottawa Valley food assistance programs?
Among them, eight-year-od Jacob will have to come to the food bank with his family during the Holiday Season. For his parents, Patrick and Isabelle, the Christmas magic seems unattainable this year. The last months have brought on heart-rending choices: drastically reduce groceries, change their food habits, reduce meal portions. Despite all their efforts, their situation forces them to contact their neighbourhood organization. Once there, they are initially overwhelmed by shame. However, other families with children like their son Jacob meet their gaze, and, suddenly, the pressure and discomfort disappear to make way for a feeling of reassurance and gratitude. They realize that they are far from being the only ones facing this reality. This year, the Christmas magic will not come from decorations and gifts, but rather from the warmth of a kind and benevolent community. Patrick, Isabelle and Jacob realize that Christmas is also a celebration of shared solidarity, hope and love.
“I am happy to be able to offer my son a meal, on December 25, but also during the coming months thanks to our neighbourhood food bank.”

1. Fulfill an Essential Need
Essential to survive, eating is a fundamental need for each human being. When a person is in a vulnerable situation, emergency food supplies offer an immediate solution to adequate nutrition.
2. Bringing the Community Together
For people who are alone, soup kitchens create a gathering place. During the Holiday Season, getting together over a hot meal fosters discussions and encounters while relieving loneliness. By working together to fight hunger, these organizations share the common objective of creating a stronger and more resilient social fabric.
3. Upholding Social Justice
Access to food is a vital right that contributes to a more just and inclusive world. For homeless people, accommodation centers allow them to eat, but also provide them with comfort, security and caring while equipping them to ensure a better quality of life.
4. Atténuer le stress psychologique, physique et financier
Winter’s cold weather can be very costly for low-income families. This is why family homes act as landmarks to reinforce households. They become, among others, the gateway to other resources like learning to cook in order to meet the food needs of children.
